I don’t think you are alone at all - there are a lot of us who have felt that way. We all need to give ourselves a permission to wear what we feel happy wearing 🥰
I am definitely at this point now. I’m just now sitting in my early 30’s, but with 4 kids it’s a big thing just for ME to have some intention behind my wardrobe. Getting ready is my moment each day. It feels so much better to have pieces that feel like an expression of me than to try and use my clothes to impress or stay on trend.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece and am delighted to say, at 33, I’ve spent the past year doing each and every one of these for myself!
The turning points for me? When I realized I could buy vintage belt buckles and choose whatever materials and colors I wanted as the base, that I could crochet things for myself and not just others, and that I could dye/slow-stitch and otherwise alter pieces to suit myself? The sky has been the limit and I’ve been overjoyed. Being comfortable and joyously piecing outfits together from my curated capsule has been a revelation.
What are your thoughts on make up in your forties? I’m finding that I look so much better with minimal make up or make up free in my 40s than with a full made up face as I did when I was younger. What are your suggestions?
A well-thought-out article. I feel the same as you about clothing. I don't want to wear something just because it's in style, but because it makes me feel my best/suits me in color and otherwise. I have to say that striped shirt from Sezanne is so cute! It's the type of thing I'd pick out, classic and just a touch of feminine with the ruffle.
I love your style! I think women of a certain age struggle with “appropriate” fashion and end up looking frumpy and much older than they should. A few little tweaks can make a big difference.
Thank you so much Sue! I think getting older has been so far liberating experience style wise at least- I feel like I’m more free than ever to wear what I want! ❤️
This is such a well written article. I feel connected to your personal observations about dressing for yourself and how your choices changed as you aged.
It’s interesting to watch you move house and see the evolution of your new home, which is very different from your past home. Such fun, and I enjoy your writing style. Thank you for sharing your journey.
Great article!! It's nice to see I'm not the only one who has struggled with feeling myself. I'm tired of keeping up with trends and trying to fit in.

Fantastic article and really useful! I would love a more detailed “work at home style” guide if you feel inspired to write about that too 😘🩷
Love love love the outfit with the checked coat. That blouse is gorgeous. And as a fellow 40-something, I appreciate your shared wisdom!

No words. just right.

Amen to looking like oneself!

I’m 40 and feeling like this is my age and stage! 💗

Fantastic article. Really gave me food for thought.
Hi there,
Your recent post about 9 style lessons was fab. It completely resonated with me and I’d agree with everything you said.
Thank you for sharing it with all of us who are not 20-40 years old.
